Philip supposedly commissioned a Sun-priest to enchant this on the eve of his Armada’s invasion of England, so that he might view their victory from afar. The story goes that the priest invoked Moon-power in the presence of asimel, consequently cursing the skull to show only ‘the hideous, beautiful, silent end of a dream’, and making him responsible for the Armada’s crushing defeat.

Before Philip could learn of the priest’s mistake, he fled to the New World, where he found shelter amidst old friends in the Company Anchorite… or so the Dottore says. Regardless of the truth, the Intercalate caused the Solar Church to rely upon the draconian Universal Monarchs, and in some ways, become subordinate. Some, then, might call this a last relic made when the Church remained Unconquered.
