Don Alessandro LaCroce, the Prince of Fucino, spent his later years documenting the lesser-known histories of Central Italy. Upon his death, he donated this work to the Haustorium in deference to his ‘fellow Noble of the Lake’.

The flagellants of Perugia began under the guidance of Raniero Fasani, who claimed to be visited by St Bevignate, the ‘unhuman prophet’. Their practices spread across Europe, especially during the Black Death, but were condemned in 1349 as ‘profane worship of the Headless Serpent’. The Supreme Pontiff Clement VI exhorts their suppression, but imparts upon the agents of the Church the necessity of cleansing and closing the wounds of any they detain, ‘for a door left open in darkness never welcomes Light’.

LaCroce financed the draining of Lake Fucino, ostensibly for the health of the surrounding residents, but he reveals his own interest in tablets surrendered to its marshes. He shares numerous theories as to their purpose: pleadings to the Twins for mercy; gates which seal the entrance to Nowhere, to which the Sister sometimes passes - and intriguingly, as echoes of the covenant-stones which protect the libraries of the Watchman’s Tree, ‘the anchors of its roots’.
