Serpenthead Slab

A stele fragment from an overgrown ballcourt in El Cuajilote. It depicts seven serpents radiating outwards from a knotted mass, but a closer examination reveals them to be spilling out from an open, bloody neck.

The Mesoamerican Ballgame was considered a manifestation of the Corrivality, particularly associated with the Scarred Lord. Some argue it to be a ‘civilized’ proxy for conventional warfare, while others believed it to be a proving ground for bodily strength. Nonetheless, most acknowledge a parallel between the forces which propelled the playing ball and the operations of the heavens which act upon the Sun.

Stories persist of the Ballgame facilitating the ascension of Edge-long dyads, those immortals who eternally strive against each other. Many players suffered countless injuries, certainly enough to attain the Seven Marks and Grievous Wounds required of those who ascend beneath the Edge-Hours. The unfortunate depicted here did not ascend at all appears to have been beheaded - a punishment? But the etched text surrounding them reveres and repugns them: as a warrior worthy of the Corrivality, and a warrior bound inextricably to ‘the Fallen Ways of War’. Effect: Memory: Contradiction
