Before the ‘division of the Third History,’ the Nations stood strong in the Eastern Woodlands, united by the Law of Peace and led by the Mourning Mothers. The arrival of the Europeans unsettles the Mothers, and they plan for the Dark Days prophesied to come.

As disease decimates the Nations and Worms spread through the Woodlands, the Mothers petition the Pale Griever for reprieve. He cannot protect the living, but promises the safety of their Dead, and lends them ‘laments of the lake’ so their sorrows may continue to unite them.
