The ‘toxin’ in question is one of the antiontological parasites called Worms. Silk-and-Silver is rightfully concerned, observing the Green Sages locking it within a ‘wounded vessel’ alongside a number of special ‘living poisons’ native to the Grove.

When next the vessel is opened, the Worm has mutated into ‘a golden mode’. The Sages assure Silk-and-Silver that it is now tamed, no longer an indiscriminate hunter, and release it to join its brethren as an attendant to the Infinite of Tails, the Protectress of the Grove.
