Leonel Cipagauta spent time amidst the Tarantellists of Calabria, and earned enough of their trust to observe the secret rites performed in the caverns beneath.

The Tarantellists conduct dances to protect the world from untoward powers. Cipagauta asks about their involvement in the dancing plagues, but the Tarantellists claim these were irruptions of the Rising Spider’s threads, whom they entreated to give up the afflicted. ‘The Spider is the thief of joy, and the Heart Unrelenting is ever joyful.’

Cipagauta witnesses the Tarantellists beat their instruments to conjure an echo of the Thunderskin’s song, but as their dance intensifies, the cavern rumbles and forces him to escape to the surface. ‘They woke the earth in trying to protect it. Any further and they would bring it down upon themselves. I can’t help but wonder if they are the reason Calabria so often quakes.’
