The Sibilant Tongues

The itinerant scholar Shohei writes on the language of serpents, the languages gifted by serpents, and ‘the serpents which are language’.

Shohei discusses those languages which are spirits, delivered from or created in the Mansus and the Wood. He compares Vak - which demands to be spoken - with Hyksos - which demands reception. He likens the latter to the mesmerizing magics of the slain Hour called the Seven-Coiled, proposing that the language itself may be an extant branch of these magics.

‘The Hyksos were skilled serpent-charmers, for they spoke the sweet and golden tongue.’ Shohei relates an old tradition of the Shepherd-Kings, that they came to an understanding with the Serpent-Suckler, who promised to hide their greatest birthright in ‘the nest of Three Flowers’. He believes this birthright could reveal itself to one who invokes ‘he who cannot be denied’, or who performs the ‘violent wreathings’ of the Seven-Coiled before its shelter. Effect: Memory: Fear
